Firstly, I would double check with Garmin Support regarding Lifetime nuMap Updates. It has been my understanding that one purchased the 'update' for current maps only - hence the term 'nu Map'. I have a Garmin 60CSX in very good condition. It's the second CSX I've owned - bought to replace the one that was stolen out of my truck by a thieving scumbag. I recently loaded my original Mapsource 2008 software to a new computer and when I talked to tech support I mentioned that the maps weren't updating.

He told me that for $90.00 I could get unlimited quarterly map updates for as long as I own the unit. So here's where it all starts spinning around in my head: Pros: The unit is in perfect condition. Physical replacement wont be necessary anytime soon. It leads a sheltered life, mostly riding on the dash in my truck or on the handlebar of my bike. Purely street duty.

It's waterproof. It fits in a pocket easily. It runs on batteries or can be plugged in to the computer USB or auto cigarette lighter receptical. Compass, altimeter, etc. Handy features that. I have the mounts needed to switch from car duty to bike.

I also have a pouch/case that clips to my belt loop or backpack. The 60CSX can get a signal anywhere and keep it anywhere. Parking garages, tunnels, fall out shelters LOL. Smart phones have larger screens that this. It's discontinued. How long will Garmin continue to support it? I may keep it for another 10 years.

Mapsource (version 6.16.3) reliability has been sketchy at best. My wife continues to print directions from Google Maps because she doesn't trust my GPS to get us directly to our destination. It once delivered us to a bank parking lot on Cape Cod that was clearly NOT our hotel (which was actually located across town). Asking directions from the locals with a GPS on the dash just looks foolish. She wasn't amused.

She's not an explorer. Has Mapsource improved over the last few years? The fact is I appreciate the unit for all it is; conveniently portable, robust, waterproof.

That's why I chose it but if I give Garmin $90 for lifetime updates I'm going to live with it a long long time. Is it better to update the software for $90 and keep it forever because it's still just awesome or should I just bite the bullet and replace the unit with something more modern that has friendlier software. FWIW it's intended uses are walking, traveling, street motorcycle in all weather, truck and I might start geocaching. Please share your opinions, experiences, advice.
